What To Wear When You're Broke: 5 Stylish Tips

1. Troll Ebay and Etsy for Designer and Vintage Pieces

While some items—like limited edition designer collaborations—often go up in price on sites like Ebay, most of the time you can find some pretty great deals. Etsy also has a ton of sellers who specialize in curating cool vintage and designer pieces. If you have a taste for the finer things, check out these sites before splurging on off-the-rack items.
Ebay has a whole section devoted to "Fashion Treasures," and Etsy makes it easy to find their vintage fashion sellers, too.

2. Simplify Your Style

The truth is, your clothes don't have to be expensive to look expensive. The more simplified your look is, the more timeless it will feel. Looks that are classic and unfussy tend to be associated with luxury, confidence and real style. Basics that stand the test of time can be found everywhere from Nordstrom to Gap, Bloomingdales, Uniqlo and beyond.
Complicated prints and textures, buttons, straps and superfluous details all tend to look tired and dated sooner than later.
A great pair of jeans worn with a sweater or a button-down shirt will never look wrong. Same goes for a little black dress.

3. Buy Less, But Spend More

This old adage still holds true: Buy less things, but spend more money on what you do purchase. The idea with this one is that you save up to add "investment pieces" to your wardrobe, like genuine leather boots and bags, a classic wool coat, cashmere, etc.
You don't need even half the things you tell yourself you do when you're browsing Nordstrom online or Amazon.com or even Old Navy. Filling in gaps with seasonal pieces and fun extras is natural, but when you don't have a lot of money to burn, it's better spent on items you'll have for years to come.

4. Sell Your Last Season and Unworn Items

The advent of apps and the absolute proliferation of e-commerce has made it so that anyone (yes, even you) can sell just about anything online, virtually instantly. Ebay is the old standby, but for fashion mavens looking to offload expensive, sought after or designer pieces they no longer wear, there's so much more out there.
